Airplane Mode: 10 fun things you can do in iphone airplane mode

    written by Maria

I was really interested in finding 10 fun things you can do in iphone airplane mode (actually there is more than 10!). Not just a few quick tips, but the comprehensive list of how to enjoy your smart phone or ipad without any cell phone or wifi connection.  Airplane mode is not just for planes anymore. It also can be used to reduce the radiation of the ipad or phone, it is safer for children, it is great for roaming internationally without charges and it also saves tons of battery power.

My EMF Story, if your interested

A year ago, I would have never guessed that I would be writing on this topic of reducing radiation for my family. BTW airplane mode will make a HUGE difference in their radiation exposure. I was pretty unhealthy, and a blogger for parties.  I was also an accountant for so many years, sitting atop a high rise in an office above San Francisco.

Technology was everywhere. I loved it and with every new computer, printer or phone it was getting stronger. I was also getting sicker. Just insomnia, anxiety, being overweight and lots of flus. Nothing any doctor could diagnose, so I just rested and complained a lot.

One day, my daughter wanted to go without any technology. She wanted to live the way I did growing up in the 80’s for one week, so we turned it all off. Iphones, ipads, wifi, internet, televisions and printers.  Just for fun! Just to connect!

But a few days into our adventure everyone started to feel amazing. I jumped into my research and reduced my EMF’s. It changed my life!

    Reasons to Airplane Mode

First and foremost, plane flights. Get a full charge and stay entertained on that flight.  Many of us do not have laptops anymore and being bored (and trapped) on an international airplane flight is a nightmare. In airplane mode, my children and myself can be occupied.

Secondly, radiation exposure.  On my EMF meter, my ipad or iphone in use radiates 2000+ watts a minute even if you are a foot away  In airplane mode it is zero RF. So if you have any doubts about the radiation exposure, airplane mode is a great way to feel better. I leave mine on airplane all the time.

Next up, when you travel internationally you are not going to want data charges.  You can turn your phone on airplane mode and it is the easiest way to keep fees under wraps.

Internet safety for kids is also an issue on devices, and there are many apps that help you lock ipads and iphones down, but airplane mode is the simplest. Not only does it make the device safe to use, children can only access the data you download.

Planning to go somewhere with spotty coverage?  It’s another reason to be prepared because what works in the mountains is just like airplane mode.

Here’s a fun tip on airplane mode:

Lastly, for any trip where you want your battery to last forever airplane mode is a MUST! I know it works because I rarely use or charge my phone anymore. Check this article from Popular Science.

10 fun things you can do in iphone airplane mode

    1. Play EPIC Games

Did you know that Candy Crush, Walking Dead and Tetris work even when disconnected to data? According to Tech Junkie, there are tons of epic games you can play in airplane mode. There are even more on the link, but these are my favorites:

    • Angry Birds
    • Badland
    • The Escapists
    • Fallout Shelter
    • Lifeline
    • Limbo
    • Minecraft Pocket Edition
    • Plants vs Zombies 2
    • Really Bad Chess
    • The Room
    • Shadow Fight
    • Sorcery
    • Threes
    • Unblock Me
    • Star Wars

Did you know that gaming in airplane mode will usually eliminate all ads from your feed. That is a huge benefit.

I also LOVE this list of games to download before a flight for kids from Common Sense Media. Toca salon is one of my daughters favorites. Even though airplane flights is a great reason to download… think about just letting the kids play in airplane mode at home as well.  The reduced radiation is much better for them.

More fun things you can do in iphone airplane mode:

    2. Snap & Edit Photos for Emails, Instagram & Facebook

Your photo and video camera are fully functional in airplane mode.  Snap away! Most of my editing tools such as VSCO and Color Story still work as well. So have some fun, and keep documenting your life.

Later when you decide to turn airplane off, you have a full set of great photos to share with your friends and family. Or you can attach the USB to Apple Iphone charger to the computer and transfer your pictures.

    3. Write and Read Texts and Emails

First, you want to download your emails in standard mode. Just open the mail and walk aways a few mintues. This tip is of course if you are not on an airplane. You can even write responses to your emails, click send, and it will go out once you turn your phone back on.

Text messages might need to be resent.

    4.  Download Movies with Vudu, Xfinity or ITunes

We have used Vudu for owning and renting digital movies for quite some time. I have a pretty large collection of kids movies that are our family favorites.  Vudu released new functionality that allows you to download movies from the their cloud.  Click download, and wait for the movie to transfer. Once the movie has downloaded, you can watch it as much as you like in airplane mode.

Itunes has the same functionality and the movies appear under “TV”.  Wanna know how?  Here is a great link Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows and books from the iTunes Store.

Xfinity (Comcast) has an app where you can download videos saved on your DVR. This is my favorite because my shows are completely free if I saved them.

    5. Listen to and Audible

I might be telling you too much about myself, but I like to use the treadmill whiles listening to the Power of Vulnerability from Brene Brown. Giggling one minute and wiping tears away another.  I always have to choose a little corner of the gym where I am undetected.

You will need to be powered up in standard mode, to download an Audible.  I just click it and walk away for 5 minutes or so. I have about 3 books available at one time, and any that are on your device can be listened to.

Are you EMF sensistive?  Some of us are really effected by the radiation from cell phones, etc.  If that might be you, you will want some extended airbud ear buds.

    6.  Read Books

Kindle and itunes have books that can be saved on your device for use anytime.

    7. Make a Pandora like Playlist

I know, one of the most common things I hear about airplane mode is “how will I listen to Pandora”? Well, you can’t. Plain and simple. I will give you the next best thing.  Make a playlist on your phone with 20 downloaded songs. Call it Playlist Pandora and shuffle it to play.

Almost as good, but you may forget pretty quick what you were missing.

    8.  Watch Music Videos or Listen to Music

Your favorite jams are likely already on your phone, so mix it up. Download a few different songs for the week and play away. Radiation free, in the mountains or on an airplane!

    9.  Set Alarms

All your appointment reminders and alarms still work. Sit back and relax because these need no internet, wifi, cell reception to work. Just a little power. This might not, be the most fun unless you have a great sense of humor. Like 8am, time to hug a tree.

What you cannot do in airplane mode… Pandora, Instagram, Netflix, YouTube, Safari, Facebook, send emails, make phone calls and anything that requires streaming or cell towers. However, that is why airplane mode always works and is radiation free.

    10.  Even More Airplane Mode Discoveries

    • Download a map of your destination city for your travels. These maps are fantastic and stay on your device in case of spotty coverage.
    • Save important documents into Dropbox offline in case you need them on a trip
    • Use your notepad
    • Create voice memos
    • Word Swag and other photo and meme editing apps
    • Calculator
    • Clock, stopwatch and timer
    • Flashlight

Are you surprised how much can be done in airplane mode?  What did I miss. Send me a comment.
